Simple tips to optimize computer performance and prevent errors!
Computers will become running slow down the more they are used unless routinely maintained to optimize computer performance. Once a computer is put on a regular schedule of maintenance, not only will the schedule optimize computer performance, but it will help to prevent common errors at the same time.
First Steps to Better Computer Performance
Either when the computer is first purchased, or at least before other maintenance tasks are addressed, a computer should be outfitted with anti-virus and anti-spyware software. If these are already in place, the updates may have expired. Make sure to renew these as often as required so that the computer is protected from the latest security threats.
If the computer has been in use for a while with little maintenance, chances are it may be time for disk defragmentation. Fragmentation occurs when data is saved in non-contiguous blocks of space. This can make retrieving files a slow process if the disk has to jump around to several spots to read the entire file. Find the Disk Defragmenter Tool under Accessories and then System Tools.
Finally, it may be a good idea to create a restore point. If the computer is running free of most errors at this time, then creating a restore point gives the computer something to restore back to if a major error occurs.
Ongoing Computer Maintenance for Optimization
Microsoft recommends that the Disk Check tool included on the PC should be run about once a week. This will fix any errors on the disk caused by program crashes or power outages.
o Under My Computer, select Properties
o Then the Tools tab
o Select “Check Now” under the Error-Checking Section
It is also advised to select the option to run the Disk Check tool next time the computer is restarted.
Temporary files can take up a lot of space on a computer, which will slow it down and lead to errors in the future. Eliminate some of the excess information on the PC by again going to Properties and clicking on Disk Cleanup. This will provide a list of files that can be deleted to free up space on the computer.
The Disk Defragmenter Tool should also be run regularly to keep files organized and easily accessible by the computer. Do this again monthly.
Kick Up Computer Optimization
To truly optimize computer performance and prevent a host of errors, maintaining the computer’s registry is key. The Windows registry stores hundreds of files that pertain to computer settings, program settings, and user preferences.
Entries can become cluttered when they are no longer needed and registry keys can become corrupted or go missing simply through normal computer use. Maintain Windows registry to optimize computer performance will provide the fastest computer and error messages will also disappear.
