Small Laptops – Which Netbook to Buy?

July 27th, 2011No comments »

Small laptops are often referenced to as netbooks, and it’s no wonder since they’re made for Internet browsing. Some people say that they should be shown the door now that economy is back on its feet, other experts except the exact opposite to happen; they vision an increased demand for them and rightly so, with new developments being fed to the market we’re likely to see some buzzing in the hive in the upcoming months.

Netbooks were designed to be cheap, since they were aimed at emerging markets to boost education, quite surprisingly domestic markets shown interest that has been on the rise ever since. These little computers are made as small as they can be without jeopardizing comfortable use, every component is made to be cheap first, power effective second. As a result they’re a little short on raw computing power, but they readily plug the hole with their respectable battery life.

There are quite a few models on the market right now and a lot more are expected to come before Christmas. Right now you can choose if you want something from the cheap end of the rainbow, or there are trick you need to teach to the newcomer thus a faster processor would be welcome. Asus is fighting hard to stay on the market and they’re doing well if their intention was to take all top spots, they definitely nailed both the battery-conscious and the performance-hungry rather well.

Asus 1005PE-P

This notebook is not fast, at least not in the original sense of the word, the performance is just enough to run a browser with multiple tabs, your e-mail client and a copy of MSN Live, and that’s about it. If you want to watch a movie you’re better off if you close other programs first. The processor is named N450, but it could be just as well called N270 with integrated graphics and memory controller.

The speed is not something you call home about, but it will be enough; don’t rush anything and try to be patient and you’ll find out that netbooks do many more things than just the browser. The 14 hours battery is probably the strongest selling point of these, if you need to be productive on the go, this feature won’t be wasted.

Asus 1201N

If you’re obsessed with performance, speed, processor cores and video cards, this is your choice. With Atom 330 dual core processor it’s the king of netbooks, and Nvidia ION is probably as fast as a graphics core gets in the minis. Don’t expect the computer to be as fast as a primary desktop configuration, but you’ll be able to watch 1080p videos and play some older games. The 12″ screen and 4-5 hours battery definitely makes it an ultra-portable machine, but the price is around $450 which is about as much as some people are willing to give for any notebook.

Netbooks – What is an N270 Processor Good For?

July 27th, 2011No comments »

Those who start looking around for a netbook to get are put in a situation where they need to take a look at the components of each and every machine to make a good decision. Which one is fast enough, which gives a good battery life and if there are viable alternatives. The most popular processor is still the N270 Atom in cheaper category mini notebooks, you should be aware of the performance it provides.

Performance is usually described when this processor is involved as “good enough”, or “good enough for Internet browsing”. What does that even mean may the average user ask, does it work well with Skype, can you watch movies? What about some games, can you play them? What do they mean with Internet browsing anyway, does that mean it runs flash too?

The N270 is made to be the core of portable computers. Before Intel had this core they had to use down-clocked, filtered Celerons and mobile Pentiums to even start to tackle the netbook category, now they have a fully equipped heavy bomber. Or do they? The n270 is designed in a way that is not used in desktop processors. Intel basically threw everything away that would have made the processor 1% faster at the cost of more than 1% power consumption.

This is why some parts of the processor that could have benefited scientific calculations or games were omitted. HyperThreading however made it into the final product, that’s why you see two processors in Task Manager while the computer has only one processing core. This single core is good for a lot of things; most often mentioned is browsing. It can run a browser without a hitch, you will be able to use multiple tabs and thanks to the 1GB RAM often used with the processor and Hyper Threading.

You can watch movies, you just need to take a look at several points of the said video. Is it streaming media, YouTube for example? In this case you’ll have to set it to 360p to enjoy fluid motion, otherwise it would just be a painful stuttering set of images put together. If you choose your codec pack or media player well, and the movie is encoded just right, you can attempt 720p, but don’t expect everything to work right away, also note that no netbook comes with integrated optical drive, which may make it difficult to obtain the latest titles.

Flash games work perfectly, in case it is a more crafty product, FarmVille pops to mind, you may want to set quality settings to low. N270 is good enough to enable video chat, and integrated webcameras make it even easier. You can do almost anything with a mini notebook, but keep in mind that these are cheap, low power consumption devices, so the right set of expectations is advised.

Netbooks – Four Reasons to Buy One

July 27th, 2011No comments »

Netbooks are considered to be the smallest fully featured notebooks on the market today, and it’s no wonder, you don’t really get a computing device that runs windows smaller than them. These mini notebook computers are made to be cheap and highly portable, but do you really need one?

If you want a netbook this is probably the best time to get one, they are most probably going to be transformed to something else, the lines are more and more blurred every day between full size notebooks and the minis. A 10″ costs around $300 to $350, whereas a normal notebook starts at around $500, so the price is not an excuse to skip them, but why should you buy one?

1. If you are a computer geek you probably knew you want one as soon as they hit the market. They’re small, they’re light and they’re awesome. Anything that is small yet does what the big ones of the same thing do is dear to hearts of the geeks, that’s why they get calculator wristwatches, smartphones and laser pointers.

2. If you are college student you know that campuses often include a PE class that’s all day long and called ‘catching the next lecture’. Students attending college or university need to take notes thorough the day and a netbook is just the perfect companion for that, it works for a whole day on a single, small so carrying a heavy bag around is not an issue, and cost very little, which is usually the most important feature for students on the tight budget.

3. Battery life is just plain awesome. Some models go as far as 11 hours on a single charge, which will be enough for almost everyone. That means these little computers run for a whole working day, and then some time commuting home. If you are irritated by big bulky laptops that can’t play a movie while on battery, you’ll just love a netbook.

4. They’re cheap. They are in fact as cheap as a computer with full functionality get, you can’t get a computer with integrated web camera, a gigabyte of RAM, 1.6GHz processor, 5-10 hours battery for less than $300. Maybe if you look at refurbished models you can save some money, but I’d like to discourage everyone from buying a second hand notebook without good foundations in knowledge about laptops. As far as brand new computers go, netbooks are your best bet.

Google TV Launches in 2010 to Bring the Web Into Our Living Room

July 27th, 2011No comments »

Google TV? not really, far fetched far from it!

When Google hold their annual I/O developer conference the question was what else could the search mongol come up with to dominate the tech space? Google TV was the answer that came out of Google I/O this morning. Using search to determined what TV show, movie or channel you want to watch Google has integrated the worlds largest search engine into our living room. TV meet web. Web meets TV as it states on Google’s Blog today.

At the consumer electronics show CES in Las Vegas this year the big hits were 3D and interconnected TVs and it was clear that the industry is looking to bring internet connectivity to our TVs. Google TV offers exactly this connectivity and combines the best of the web on while you are watching your favorite show. Browse Facebook, watch your favorite photo slideshow, the funniest YouTube videos or the latest episode of Glee on your 40″ TV. Or better even have it all open at once if you prefer.

Google TV launches in fall 2010 and will be available in selected stores across the US. It will take shape in from of Google enabled DVR and blue-ray players, setop boxes and full size TVs and although we haven’t heard anything about the price point as yet, its fair to assume that it will be heavily subsidized by Google’s famous ads. Which could be good news if you are on a budget. The service will run on Google’s new Chrome OS, which we expect to see sometime next year rolling out on PCs.

It makes you wonder whether there is a consumer electronics market that could be safe from the search giant? Google’s launch of the Android mobile phone OS and this year’s move into the handset market with its very own Nexus One phone are evidence of aggressive this territory. It also explains why Apple and Google made the right choice in separating their executive boards last year.

Rumors about a Google music store are also floating around Twitter today, which makes sense considering their competing with the iPhone on all other markets such as browser, calendar, cloud, apps and mobile handsets. Why not rival iTunes with a Google TV a music store as well?

Google is on the market share hunt and so far no market is safe. The hand-held tech gadget market is already being challenged from the search giant and now that they are entering our living rooms, the sky seems to be the limit. In light of this you can probably understand or forgive the pullout of China earlier this year as a strategic move to really focus on the more profitable growth markets of the western world first. Does leave a bad taste for investors nevertheless and brings risk. Ablibaba China’s Ecommerce giant and second largest IPO after Google is already showing Google like growth trends and that’s just in their native language.

We all better learn Chinese…

Mini Notebook Computer – Which Processor is Fast Enough?

July 27th, 2011No comments »

A mini notebook computer is a device designed for Internet use, it’s basically a mobile internet device grown up. The most often seen processor in these devices is Intel Atom N270, but you may see other variations as well. What does their clock speed mean, and which one is fast enough for what you’re going to use the computer?

It entirely depends on what you consider fast enough. The average user who pops in to check their Facebook or twitter account twice a day will find any netbook good enough. They all run the browser without problems, and you won’t see much delay when switching tabs either. It’s not recommended to have more than 20 tabs at once, not because the processor gives up, but 1GB memory, which is more or less the default in minis, may prove lackluster. You’d also have trouble keeping in mind which one is which on a 1024 px wide screen.

Users who do more with their small laptops than just browsing some static pages should take a good second look at what processor is in the device. Z520 is an old creation, try to keep away if it’s up to you. 1.33GHz and the Atom architecture will be too slow for enjoyable YouTube streaming even in standard definition, and you’d see slow flash animations, too. N270 is the most popular choice, clocked at 1.6GHz, and 2.5W rated TDP it’s a reasonable choice.

A computer that is equipped with it is most probably going to get along with your movie collection, and you’ll have no trouble playing 360p streaming videos, keep away from the ‘High Definition’ button, though, you don’t want to see the massacre it makes. A slightly better choice if you demand desktop like experience from your netbook is the Atom 330 dual core processor.

It’s a package with two N270 cores glued on it, every single piece of feature is as if you had two N270s except for one; it’s not twice as fast. Independent benchmarks show that you can expect 20 to 60% speed increase over the single core variation, which may be something you want to skip if battery life is of any importance for you.

N280 is the same thing as N270 apart from a few unimportant bits. It’s 60MHz faster which is a 4% raw clock speed increase over the slower processor, but since the front side bus is 166MHz instead of 133MHz (667 and 533MHz respectively in Intel terminology) RAM operations are somewhat snappier. Don’t expect radical performance boost, you’re probably better off choosing an N270 based one with slightly longer battery life.

Dual Core Atom – Do You Really Need One in Your Netbook?

July 27th, 2011No comments »

Netbooks are small portable computers made for more price sensitive markets; they’re basically laptops made using cheap and efficient components. Either the recession had a perfect timing, or Asus planned it well, we don’t know, but the fact is that demand for cheap laptops have been increasing ever since these small laptops were introduced three years ago.

A common feature(or limitation) in netbooks was that they weren’t as fast as other full-fledged notebooks. They had a small screen, a small efficient processor and just as much ram as the computer really had to have. They weren’t much good for anything else than browsing websites, and that approach is starting to take a new direction nowadays. There are dual core variations of the slow Atom processor, and bigger computers are built using them.

A single core atom renders a browser, gets you through the day given that your day is mostly about communicating with other people through IM services or e-mail. Once you run into High Definition movies, or HD streaming media the steam escapes and the little netbook is brought to its knees, that’s where a dual core atom would come handy, but do you really need these processors?

Dual core netbooks are fitted with these processors and usually a stronger graphic core to play HD videos, some older games and even the most detailed flash content. Not something you come across during a day on the move, and definitely something you don’t use your netbook for if you have anything else. These new processors are most probably utilized now to keep the demand for netbooks on the rise, more power, more connectors, bigger screen.

It caters for other markets, people who considered 10″ too small to comfortably work on and 10 hours battery life unnecessarily much for their needs. These are the people who pay 5 hours of mobile use for another extra core, a reasonably fast graphic core and more memory. It’s more about blurring the line between normal size notebooks and netbooks than anything else, and considering that the price falls just between the two categories some people may find them appealing.

For hardcore netbook fans these computers are too bulky and they still think that a netbook should be ultra portable, work for many hours on a single charge, even if these features come at the expense of Dual Core Atom performance. Who knows, both groups are convinced that they’re right, one thing is clear though, if you divide the price with performance these computers give you get two similar numbers for both categories, so the only thing you need to decide is if you want the bigger one, or the smaller one.

Windows 7 Icon Free Desktop

July 27th, 2011No comments »

Would you like your desktop free of clutter? You can place your icons in the taskbar and keep your desktop clear. This article explains how.

First we need to create a ‘desktop shortcut’ for the icons we want to place in the taskbar. Right click on the icon to get a menu. Choose ‘create desktop shortcut’. A desktop shortcut should now appear in the desktop.

The second step is to remove the original icons from the desktop. To remove icons from the desktop right click anywhere on the desktop. A menu will appear, scroll down to the bottom of the list and click on ‘Personalize’. This will open the ‘Personalize’ panel.

Along the left side of the panel is a menu. Click on ‘Change desktop icons’, which is second down on the list. Uncheck all the boxes and click apply. Now all the original icons should have disappeared from the desktop. leaving you with just the shortcuts.

The final step is to move the desktop shortcuts to the taskbar. To do this you need to bring back the ‘quick launch toolbar’ to the taskbar. Follow these instructions:

Right click the taskbar, choose Toolbars / New Toolbar. Enter:

%userprofile%AppDataRoamingMicrosoftInternet ExplorerQuick Launch

in the folder selection box.

Turn off the “lock the taskbar” setting, and right-click on the divider. Ensure “Show text” and “Show title” are unchecked and the view is checked “small icons”.

Using the dividers arrange the toolbar ordering to your preference and when your ready lock the taskbar.

Now you can drop the desktop short cut icons into the right side of the taskbar which will leave your desktop empty and free of clutter.

If at anytime you wish to remove an icon from the taskbar, just right click on the icon and select ‘delete’ or ‘unpin from taskbar’. Remember you are only deleting the shortcut not the original icon.

I hope you have found this article useful and enjoy the benefits of having a clear desktop.

How to Print DVD Covers the Right Size Every Time

July 27th, 2011No comments »

One of the problems I have noticed among those that like to print out covers for their DVD collections, is getting it to come out the correct size. For a long time, mine would always end up with about a 1/4 of an inch cut off.

I have used different programs with varying degrees of success. Sometimes they would come out perfect, but more often than not, I was not completely happy with the results, and if I was, I would sooner or later be asked to hand over my dough, now that the trial period was over.

I recently began using the freeware Irfanview (www.irfanview.com) to print my covers, and now they always come out at the correct size.

STEP 1: If you do not already have Irfanview, download it (see link above). Once downloaded, open it.

STEP 2: At the top of the page in left hand corner, you will see “File”. Click on that. Click “Open”. Now, browse to where ever the DVD cover you want to print is kept. Click on it. Now click open and you will now see the image in the Irfanview window.

STEP 3: Again, click on File. Click on Print. This will bring up the print preview. For print size, select custom.

The measurements you want to enter depend on whether you want it to fit a standard sized DVD case, or the somewhat thinner slim line case.

Standard sized case-width: 27.6 centimeters height:18.4 centimeters

Slim line case- width: 10.5 inches height:7.25 inches.

Make sure you have the correct units for custom and position selected(inches or centimeters), and click on print.

STEP 4:Wait a bit for it to dry (Obviously, you will be able to tell better than I will, since I do not know what type of paper you will be using. Sometimes, normal plain everyday copy paper works, and sometimes you might want to use photo paper or matte, instead).

STEP 5;

Trim off the excess paper, either with scissors or Exacto knife, razor, etc. Be careful!

Insert into DVD case and there you have it!
